With a meager salary received from teaching back home in the Philippines many years ago, I started buying books from bookstores, not second hand ones, but brand new ones. I received the book The Giving Tree, which became my favourite, and I knew in my heart that the cost was equivalent to our one month's salary, that's how low we were paid that time.
Whenever I get an opportunity to visit Manila, my suitcase will be filled with books. I fondly remember buying them from a bookstore in Makati where the prices of Scholastic books were much cheaper than others. I always go there but in one of my visits, I was being followed by a salesgirl as I pick one book at a time until I had a pile of around fifteen books. Her shadowing irritated me so I left all the books and bade farewell to that bookstore.
I became a fan of Book Wagon, a specialty store owned by a friend. I discovered one bookstore along Boni High Street but my first and only visit wasn't a pleasant one. Three employees of the store were chit chatting and when I went to their small group to ask for a new copy of a book I need to purchase, their smirks were so obvious. What bad service for such a posh bookstore!
After accumulating more than a thousand in my collection, I discovered a haven for second hand books at the Weekend Market here in Bangkok. The owner of the shop usually sold the books for a mere fifty to a hundred baht when I started buying them. Later, he doubly raised the prices as he found out that a lot of people had been telling him the books were so cheap. Lesson in economics!
There had been an intense interest to collect Caldecott Medal Winner books and I had around 40 titles in a span of 77 Caldecott years. I started collecting Dr. Seuss and even got two nice versions from Beijing when I was there, in Chinese Mandarin. I completed the Elephant and Piggie series of books and I had nineteen of them, some were given as gifts. I am eyeing collecting Robert Sabuda's pop-up ones and I already had four at present but they are pricey.
Whenever I am asked what I want as a present, I always say a book. I got an Australian book and a Spanish one about Christmas. I received one from France and a beautiful book about friendship from Canada. I also have signed books by famous authors such as Jeannie Baker, Julia Wirdheim, and Janice Santikarn to name a few.
While dusting off the shelves, I recalled why one of my books from Malaysia was enclosed inside a zip lock bag. I got the book for 39.99 RM some fifteen years ago which was a luxury at that time. My last one came from Germany which has the same theme and costs me thirteen hundred baht.
Books are my friends. They are primarily a source of great ideas and information as I teach young children. I am so pleased to have grown as a person surrounded by books. They are my priceless treasures.
All of a sudden I hate you. I AM GREEN WITH ENVY. hahaha! Why?! Why do I only have more than 250 books and not over a thousand?! I hate my life! Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteLast year nung umuwi ako I brought a very large luggage. Isang pantalon, shorts, a dozen underwears, socks, shirts, and a pair of shoes. Yun kang kasi ang balak ko ay mag hoard ng mga libro ng mga Filipino authors. Ganyan din ako ka fanatic sa libro.
I have fewer books compared to yours because I only buy books by my favorite writers and specific genres.
Now I'm saving money to buy hardbound books.
My ultimate dream? Maging collector ng mga antique books- from ancient parchments, medieval books, and first editions of 19th century writers, and then build an exclusive library that is as exclusive, as secretive, and as special as the Vatican Secret Archives.
Books are not my friends. They're my drugs thar keep me mentally stable. Kung walang libro hindi ko alam kung ano mangyayari sakin. I might become a commoner. There's nothing worse than being an average person. Hahaha!
This year I might study French, so I can start collecting books by French authors. I have books in Italian, English and Filipino. The only french book that I read in the original language is Le Petit Prince. Took me two months to finish it because I had to consult the dictionary. Hehehe! But it's been a while. Need to polish again mlthose french verbs....
Anyway, you might consider including in your collection that book where my short story was featured. Hehehe! Nagtaas talaga ng sarili no? Hahaha!
By the way, there's an interesting bookshop in Manila, in Ermita. Have you heard about La Solidaridad Bookshop? It's owner is the illustrious great writer and National Artisr for Literature F. Sionil José (yes, one of my beloved amd favorite writers). Minsan nandun din siya sa bookstore and if he has time he's willing to sit down and have a chat with his fans. He's over 80 so I hope maabutan ko pa siya ng buhay kapag umuwi ako next year. God please make him live longer!
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome !
ReplyDeleteThey are not meagre books; they are real treasures indeed !
I have visited used books selling shops in Bangkok. Here too we have such outlets almost in every city. Not bad, I sometimes find rare, and 'valuable' books there. What I feel is that the exorbitant cost of the books made people shy away from buying them and the reading habits slowly took a backtrack. Online book stores are very helpful now-a-days, easy to order.
I too have a collection arranged neatly on a book shelf. A big collection of digital books is also there.
Those old books have antique value, treasure those ! They are priceless !
I always hope if I had kept those books, textbooks included, I read from first standard onward safely !
Cheers buddy, have a nice weekend ahead :)
wow dami books!!! heaven!
ReplyDeleteNalakalula naman kayo. I love reading books too, kaya lang nong nagumpisa na kong mag blog, nauubos na ang oras ko sa pagbasa ng blogs posts instead. Well, blog articles are inspiring too. Stories to be read, to learn, to be involved
ReplyDeleteOh my.. your library is one of the heavens on earth.
ReplyDeleteWhenever me and my siblings talk about our dreamhouse, I always emphasize on having a studyroom/library...
Books reminds us that we are never alone.
Mr. Tripster,
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things to share based on your comments. I had been collecting for many years and even if I don't have enough to eat, I will still buy a book. I carry almost 45 kilos every time I am in Manila. I accumulated more than two thousands not because I bought them all but also through gifts from friends and parents. They are all in two separate rooms of the house, including the more than 50 instructional games I collected from England, Israel, USA, and other countries. My problem with moving is that I cannot just pack my things and go. It had to be planned like cargo or movers to help me out.
I also dreamed of having my own library, and I would like to write and illustrate one or two books. This is another goal to extend having a library. Hardbound books are super duper great but very expensive. My greatest enemy with books is the humidity. If I could find a cheaper humidifier I will buy one. One expense after another!
I asked you about your book in your older post and will try to get it. My friend is going back to Italy so maybe she can get it for me through the bookstore. If not, there's Amazon where I can get delivery straight to my house for free, secret!
Yes I know La Solidaridad and I bought from their shop a copy of Noli or El Fili but I guess i gave them away, stupid me. Their books are precious but hefty as well. We could probably meet there next year, ha,ha,ha.
Have a great week!
Dear Rajiv,
ReplyDeleteI grew up in a family where books were rare. My father is Chinese and he insisted that we work after school rather than spend our free time reading or playing with friends. I started reading good books when I studied Philosophy and majored in it. I am fascinated by religions and travels and my reading extends now to blog postings and websites.
I heard that people often give less priority to books because of its price. It is better to feed the stomach that's why reading had not been a crucial and needed part of growing children especially in poverty stricken ones. My goal is to establish a library where I could actually roam around the city and have the children read the books and I could do some storytelling sessions. However, I am not a rich person that's why until now, it is just a dream. I still need to support myself. :)
I will one day visit Kerala to see my close friend and you. Then we could explore historical sites, and sit in a cafe discussing life.
I share Joy's comment... I feel her ha ha
ReplyDeleteI think I have the same fascination as yours when I was your age (I feel so old lol). But as you grow older and have your own family to tend to, medyo nale-less prioritize such form of hobbies or passion. Ang dami na kasing umaagaw sa atensyon mo eh.
I started to give away my book collection to people who can read and take care of them more than I can. Ang naiiwan na lang yung mga hindi ko pa nababasa.
I hope I can add some to your collection though I'm not sure kung anong mai-se-share ko... hmmn . This is no promise but I hope I will some time :)
Alam ko na kung ano ibibigay ko sayo! :)
ReplyDeleteAng saya marahil pumunta sa iyong lugar. Maraming mababasa at matututunan. Nakakabilib ang koleksyon mo ng mga libro. Tunay nga na kayamanan mo ang mga ito. :)
ReplyDelete@ jobologist,
ReplyDeleteHeaven but it was hell collecting them, need to work really hard, lol!
Hello Ms. Joy,
ReplyDeleteGood point as I also learn a lot from reading blogs. You are also very busy since you maintain three blogs and that you also do crafty things and go to work, not to mention a wife and a mother.
Hi cher Kat,
ReplyDeleteThe problem of having a library in Manila is probably the flood. You should have them on the uppermost floor. I also want a house with a study room/ library where I can go inside and be with the power and soul of words.
Hello Cristine,
ReplyDeleteYou really want to be a teacher? Kidding aside it is a lot of work and responsibilities but worth every minute of your time since you deal with nurturing minds and molding hearts. Get a bookshelf but do not fill it up with 'just' books. It is better to have a good collection rather than a large number of uninteresting books to read. My pleasure visiting your blog.
Hello Ms. Balut,
ReplyDeleteOh thank you, thank you. I don't read all the time since I am also busy with other things. But I enjoy reading my gardening books of which I have 39 copies and review them all the time. I do feel I will take an assessment about gardening whenever I do my walking along the garden.
The best time to read is when I am at the beach doing nothing but sitting down, eating, sleeping, and reading. What a life!
Ola Mar,
ReplyDeleteAba may gift ako from you? Suwerte ko naman :)
Hi Cher Jep,
ReplyDeleteAlam mo bang minsan eh sinabi kong hindi ako bibili ng dining table, plywood na lang dahil yung mga libro ang magiging paa, ha,ha,ha. Sa dami niya, hindi ko na maayos but during the spring break, I was able to. They are catalogued and arranged by theme. So when I cleaned up, I decided to write something about it.
Hello sir Jo! sensya na, ngayon lng ulit nakabisita. I dunno... feels like I was bitten by that pesky lazy bug... grabe ang effect... overwhelming katamaran LOL
ReplyDeleteback to the topic, grabe ang dami nyo na pa lang na-collect na books. may mini-library na kayo sa bahay.
speaking of books... nahiya ako... di ko pa nababasa yung bigay nyong books sakin >_<
Waaa..... Naka catalogue na sila... pabasa :) hehe
ReplyDeleteVery nice collection! I sue to collect books also. No I have hundred of ebooks. :) So much easier to carry around and on my back. LOL
