Quotes Unlimited

One night, a sudden urge to review past comments written in my blog prompted me to highlight some of the comments I wrote.  I read and re-read them to remind myself that these writings were not just for the people I shared my thoughts to but also for me, fitting quotes to live by.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

It's High Time

  Love, and love largely.
When you decide to, do take the jump, this leap of faith.
If you do get burned in this Ring of Fire in the end,
you will, in the very least, look back,
burned wings, singed hair, and all,
and know that the Loving had been worth all.
Plunge into it.
Give it all you got.
Do not keep safe, for this is where others fail.
People worth having is never had without the risks, after all.

                                                                                 Ian

Flying back from Manila, I bumped into a friend whom I have not seen in almost 14 years. We exchanged notes and stories of late during the flight.  When the conversation came to relationships, she asked me why I never bothered to have one.  Due to her insistence, I smiled and nodded my head.

I told her I am, and very happy.  She told me that she noticed something since we started talking.  A certain aura, beaming, radiating through my smiles and dialogues.  But it was the twinkle in my eyes that betrayed me when I said I have no one.

She was right!  And I noticed that my recent photograph (taken Friday evening)  is very different from the hundreds of pictures taken from all my travels.  This one is genuinely happy.

Like the beginning of a new day, there it is, a hint of a smile. Time to be happy!

Longing For You To Walk With Me in My Garden

I was busy being happy and the results were quite ok.  I do draw and paint but one night, while waiting for everyone to finish, I was left alone to do nothing so I made these illustrations via an app called Sketches

The flowers were photographed during my short stay in Kamphaengphet and became a reference as I drew one flower each.

These lovely flowers were drawn because I am inspired by someone, though inspiration comes in many forms.

When I was sick many years ago, I produced artworks that are now stacked together in boxes. When I was sad, I did calligraphy writing to let the sadness go.  When I am in love, these sketches then.

They may be amateurish and my actuations, teenage like, but it is better to show one's happiness than wallow in the dark.

Spring Growth

With the recent ongoings both personal and professional, the garden stood at a standstill as I bask in gloomy thoughts in the house.  Sundays, which are my days of wonder and commune with nature, became dark clouds in the beginning of spring.

While sweeping the lawn had been assigned to as part of my evening chores, it had not been oblivious to me that the climber at the back of the house is breaking loose.  I knew that the branches and smaller limbs caresses me every night, as if tickling me to bring me to joy.  It was always dismissed as something nuisance rather than a friendly tap.

So one Sunday, I decided to break out of my tedious schedule and walked to the back of the house for an inspection.  Lo and behold Mother's nature grand welcome, a sprawling brood of leaves and vines.

It was welcoming as the colour shows vibrancy giving the garden a festive mood.  However, it is also the perennial love of bugs and caterpillars so the itchiness part could give my allergy a boost.  So what to do?

I let it grow and will do so until the rain comes.  I am just wary of the harm it could do to my other plants.  I will, time permitting, trim those curly vines and luscious leaves so as to let sunshine passed trough the lower vegetation.

When life is messy, we do no just wallow in a corner and mope.  We must do something with it.  As I am not in my greatest mood, there are now some great things happening in my personal being that simply cannot be dismissed.  I get to smile a bit, hope a bit, and feel better.  It is making me joyful.  For now, like the climber, I will let it grow.

Life's Vicissitudes

Mines View Park, Baguio, Philippines

Not everyone will understand your journey.  That's okay.
You're here to live your life, not to make everyone understand.

As we grow wiser, we will find that the answers to our questions can be found not through internet searches or consultations with others.  The richness and depth of our experiences, be it good or not, will answer them.

I was a lost soul when I was much younger, not knowing what I really like. Would I pursue law or continue with Theology and as I fall in indecisiveness, I ended in a straight path, a profession I learned to care and love.  My experiences taught me to take my time, to feel where my heart is, and dig deeper. I needed to sink roots and I did.

I had loved a few people but rejected by many.  My experiences taught me to love myself fully rather than offer myself to despair.  I wasn't able to marry, a regret I had, but my single blessedness is giving me opportunities that I might not be able to do if I have my own family.

I met so many people in my life both locals and international.  That nationality is not a factor in friendship, but sincerity in its pursuit.  That wealth is a measurement for others but not for those who stayed.  That distance is not important to those who continue to reach out.  Friends come but many will go and for those who will stay, keep them in your hearts.

That whatever choices I make in my life is mine.  If you do not agree to my decisions, you can give your opinions but it is still me who will walk the walk.  If  I choose to go a different path, it is because I wanted to show that I can be myself, and not a follower of others' dreams.  My short stay in this world is measured by the journey I will take so I wanted them to be filled with joy.

There are three things I learn in life:

My journey is my responsibility, not anyone else's.

My sharings in life is my choice and legacy, that nobody can erase.

My decisions, though with regrets, are my life's scaffolding.

So believe and conquer.

Where the Road Leads

When we are given things in life, we do not know how to proceed. We either stop and stare, make small steps, or jump into the bandwagon. Whatever we do, it is still our own decision whether we will move on, go forward, or step back.

Some people are happy being alone while others cannot make do without someone around them. Some people struggle with their decisions whether work related or personal issues. Some give up easily for small things while others pushes themselves to their limits.

I am in many ways push myself so I can actually survive. When not so good things come, I try to study the situation with a clear mind though admittedly I am clouded by negative thoughts. Rather than carrying the burden, I try to focus on the now and let what is happening at that moment to momentarily freeze. Then I go back with my intention of solving my problems rather than dumping my issues to others or to myself. I seek but solutions. I thrive in freedom rather than breaks.

The road to success is not always a smooth ride. The driver in me knows that as a fact. So when things go crazy in my personal and professional lives, I slow down and sometimes, I stop and rest. I start driving again when my sanity is back, when the fog drifted, and when the sun dries up the rain.

Finding Subjects: Shoot and Ponder

It was a good day to shoot pictures. As I was staying in a resort close to the river, the opulence of green and eye catching scenes made me drool with delight. An amateur in photography, let me indulge you in things I found, weirdly wonderful. And the imagery of each is dedicated to some of the awesome bloggers I found.

Growing old does not mean we are no longer fruitful with our lives. It means a new chapter, with opportunities to share our experiences to the young. So we better make great stories with our lives so we partake in the telling and be an inspiration. ( dedicated to Ms. Joy)

Shoot

Ponder

Our house should not be a haven of trouble but it should be of love. The ants, with their love for their Queen, made this simple yet strong abode for themselves. Our house should be nurtured with care and love amongst siblings and parents. We build together and we grow together. ( dedicated to Ms. Lili)

Though the Heliconia flowers withered after blossoming a magnificent display of shapes and colours, its life passed through another chapter. Each and every year of our lives is a celebration of what we had done during the past. We celebrate our birthdays not because we wanted to tell the world not how old we are, but we wanted to be thankful for the blessings we received. (dedicated to Mr. Fiel-Kun)

The size of these fruit simply enthralls food lovers while challenge the palete of some for its hotness. Things whether big or small have values. Remember that a tiny speck of dust entering our eye can irritate it so as the smallest endeavour is already an achievement. A warm hug or a big smile each day is enough to start the day. Some kind words to start the week can give us a better outlook of what lies ahead. (dedicated to Mr. Ric)

Hiding conspicuously behind the younger and matured leaves is a cluster of fruit-like yields of a giant tree. Whilst growing through time, our image to others grows as well. There are people who are born with wisdom and had gathered rich experiences at a young age. Learning from their sagacity can gap the bridge between generations. I did. (dedicated to Mr. Geosef)

These pink pearls of the jungle are not decorations for the trunks and branches. There is life in those small round egg-like ready to hatched in no time. Life is a series of birth and death, and to be a witness to both is a gift. (dedicated to Rix)

Ponder

The twist and turn of the long stem is a reminder of life's intricacies. Not everything that we traverse is one straight line which makes it easy to move. Along the way, some twists and turns will have to be endured. But it isn't the destination that we put utmost importance, it is the journey. Whilst rocky the path, it is faith and hope that makes us understand life's true essence. (dedicated to asiong)

Ponder

When life gives you direction, proceed with care as there are lefts and rights to turn to. Decisions are based not just of the mind and also of the heart. It is no guarantee that they will always be right but we do find what's good about the way we are trekking. Maybe by having faith and strength, that turn we wanted can give us the direction to follow. (dedicated to yccos)

The flower is very distinctive as it resembles hands reaching up. They are like dainty fingers extended as if dancing through the sound of the wind. When we can support others with whatever we can be it time, words of encouragement or a simple hello; we might be giving others a needed boost at that time. We have our sunsets and sunrises and when someone peeks through that window to say "How do you do?", it gives us an appreciation of our existence and the friendships we made with others. (dedicated to Ms. Balut)

There you are, the photos taken from Suan Phueng, Ratchaburi and the people behind my blogging world. A big thanks to all of you.

Art of the Brick 2

Four more works by Nathan Sawaya with his short anecdote for each piece.
CELLO: As an attempt to inspire kids to explore music, I created this life-size cello completely out of Lego bricks. Although it is the exact size as a real cello, please don't try to play it, it might look like a cello but it sounds like LEGO! (2009)

COMPUTER:  The arm reaching out is representative of the reach of technology into our lives. I built this sculpture over the course of two years. The original computer was completed in 2006, but I decided to add the arm reaching out of the screen in 2008.

PEACE SYMBOL: What does it take to create peace? All the colours in the world working together, of course! This sculpture was created using thousands of recycled bricks. (2010)

MY BOY: Loss, along with love, is one of the recurring themes in my art.  This particular sculpture was inspired from a  sad story I was told by a parent. After learning of the story, I began working on this sculpture right away, finishing it almost two months later. (2009)

My personal fave is the PEACE SYMBOL for I work in an international community of different nationalities and cultures where respect is highly expected but often not followed. I always hear racial indifferences and there are times that being Asian becomes a disadvantage rather than an asset.

So just in case I will be asked in a beauty pageant, heaven forbids, I will answer the most used answer, yet still unattainable, WORLD PEACE!

The Art of the Brick

Speaking of pursuing your inner strength to actuality, I happened to be inspired by Nathan Sawaya, a lawyer by profession, when he exhibited his Art of the Brick in Taipei last year. I marvelled at each sculpture for he used only Lego bricks to create his masterpieces. Here are some of his work with quotes underneath.

CRACKED: I spent over three weeks fabricating Cracked out of approximately 9,000 LEGO bricks.
Also, the sculpture depicts how I feel every morning (2008)

DISINTEGRATION: Beware the winds of life that nibble away a your sense of self.
Stay strong. (2008)

STAIRWAY: As humans, we scour our world for opportunities. Opportunities for success. Opportunities for happiness. But more often than not, we find those opportunities not in the world outside, but within ourselves. This sculpture was built from recycled Lego bricks that had been donated to me. (200)

YELLOW: Probably my best known piece. Yellow always draws a lot of attention on the gallery floor, from adults as well as children. Why? I think we grown-ups appreciate how cathartic 'opening oneself up to the world' can be for our souls. And the kids? Probably because yellow guts spilling onto the floor looks cool. For me, this piece is about the metamorphosis I have been through on my journeys. (2006)
Four inspiring pieces that makes me reflect and look at my present life.

Am I cracked within and do those cracks show when I am with people or just when I am by myself?

Does my being disintegrate as I battle life's journeys everyday, come rain and storm?

Am I building a stairway for my own happiness and bridging gaps amongst my friends and family?

Is this year the time for me to finally show my yellow by opening myself up to the world?

Welcoming 2013

The airport of any country is the doorway to their people, their culture, their language, and their life. Suvarnabumi Airport (Thailand) puts effort in displaying the immense riches of the country from music, food, clothing, and flowers. I am always fascinated by the grand display they often put as a warm welcome to those who are arriving and to those who will be leaving. I am posting some of the orchid arrangements from a recent visit, as I welcome the year 2013.

Let the year start with greatness, coupled with hope and diligence, a year of success.

Generosity

With my very busy schedule, which was my choice, I ended not taking care of my love on a consistent basis. I would still sweep the ground, trim the branches, and fill up some pots with dirt but that would be it. Ever morning, I am even in a rush to get on the bike to go to school without giving a glimpse of what goes into the garden.

Just this week, a student cancelled my class because he was sick and it gave me the time to not only walk and clean the garden but to see what’s different. An unruly climber had slithered up to my orange tree and bloomed flowers on top of it. Pink and reddish petals canopied the tree and it was a sight to see. I got some and placed them in a basket.

Another climber had blossoms a-plenty and these flowers come in three different stages. They start as small buds and white flowers, turning to red petals before becoming brownish paper like flowers. These climbers had been perennial favourites. I have them in front and at the back of the house.

I was also greeted by the pleasant aroma of this plant when I go back home in the early evenings. It has this wonderful scent that is easy to the nose and not overpowering that permeates the air only at night time. I am blessed for that these trees, whether they are the shorter or the tallest ones in my garden, unselfishly bear flowers year after year. I was told that if they grow higher than the house, I am truly lucky. And yes, two of them are.

As I let some plants grow wildly in one of my pebbled corners, the plants had been gathering in bunches and shooting up towards light. These plants bear the most yellow flowers that attract butterflies and flying insects all the time. The flower last only a day but it flowers all throughout the year. They compliment the other annuals and perennials.

My driver gave me a small air plant two years ago as a birthday present and blue and purple flowers had been sprouting since then. I showed them to him just this week and he told me that they seemed to be happy in my little paradise. It does, because my neighbours have some and I have never seen them bloom. The flowers are exquisite.

And lastly, one plant that was given to me many years ago had produced hundreds of plantlets and the matured plants have been sprouting shoots again. They are elongated stalks twisted like wires and with small buds at the uppermost ends. Soon the buds will burst into white flowers that will then blanket the side of the house with a show to remember.

The generosity of these plants and trees will forever be imprinted as I write their stories in my blog. Nature really wants us to remember their beauty and importance. Whether they make your place pretty, give you shade from heat and the wind, or plain green for the eyes, their existence is magnified not only by their contribution but also by their generosity to always give.

2012

Welcome to a New Year!

As we finished off the year of financial difficulties and natural disasters, a new year unfolds so as to start picking up what's left, rebuilding lives and strengthening our faith.

May the year 2012 be a beacon of hope for all, a source of strength, and a life rich and prosperous.

To Teach and To Learn

It will be almost the end of the school year and all the hardwork will culminate towards the schooling of great minds. The entire year had been a challenge as new students still come even when the school year is almost done. When everyone is settled, the last person arriving has to work harder, to belong.

A child from Denmark came in last this school year with no background of the English language but she proved her worth by being resilient, receptive and resourceful. She is the epitome of what we should be all the time. It wasn't only the learning where she came across as smart but the teaching part where I get to pick her brain and her feelings through a hundred ways of communicating. We talk through sounds, words, eyes, feelings, sentiments and emotions. We communicated, we participated, we grew together as teacher and student.

Life has a purpose and when we stop learning from others, then we cease to live. Our constant exposure to people and their ways of life can harness in us an immediate reaction. However, we do so only when we open our eyes and our senses for every window of opportunity. We meet people not just to know their names but to know their personalities. We talk to people not only to say words but to translate them into feelings. We communicate with people not because we wanted to pass an information but because we wanted to build a link. We teach the people around us and we learn by being open to learning.

It might take one person for us to open our eyes. It might take one incident for us to make a decision. It might take one photograph for us to be awakened. It might take one word for us to wake up. It might take one look for us to stop. It might take one opportunity for us to propel. It might take one love for us to change. But it takes one you, to do what you needed to do.

Go, teach, learn and prosper!

What I Dream For

simple life with great meaning

is all I aspire throughout

simple needs, immaterial

a fruitful existence about.

for to live in simplicity
is without any doubt
less of trials and insecurities

of serenity devout.

a small cottage atop a hill
pristine beauty and green

or a hut that stands still

on a farm with nature serene.

with plants and flowers abloom
of caring, admiring with leisure
purple, blue, pink and red

surrounded with great pleasure.

and when to live a dream
is not but inevitability

not easy but with focus

and profound ability.
